Hey fellas, sorry to revive this one, but once I saw it, I thought I'd chime in to clear up a couple of things.

LSN2meBoom916 (love your screen name by the way... :) )

You were really close when you highlighted the "Best of show" in red... but you missed the "-sound quality" part right after that. My truck was not the best of show by any stretch of the imagination when it comes to being a sexy beast... LOL Indeed, they have a category for that in MECA called PHAT Truck which, deservably, went to Mr. Matt Roberts and his gorgeous rig.

Nope, my truck won best of show in "sound quality" only. In fact, as you can see from the panel pic that Megalomaniac posted, it is a "stealth" install. The object being to disguise the equipment inside from would-be thieves. In fact, if you looked at the truck at a show, you'd have to look pretty close to realize that it is pretty special inside. At first glance, people just pass right by... Nothing "wow" about it... until you listen to it... which brings up another point:

My truck gets loud. But it is not an SPL truck. In other words, I don't compete to see what decibel level I can attain. Instead, I've purpose-built the truck interior to get as close as I can (with my limited do-it-yourself rookie-skills) to the sound you would hear in a studio or a really nice home system. It's really hard to do as you guys well know, but I love the challenge!

Regarding the shaggy doors. You guys are right on. The folks that wrote the article were interested in giving the Legatia 8 some exposure. At the time, my grills were not removable, so I took the panel off and took the pic that you see.

You are also correct about the liner. It is there to mitigate any buzzing from the wiring when the 8's are feeling their oats. For those of you who are curious, there is between one and five layers of B-Quiet Ultimate sound damping beneath the liner and a layer of B-Quiet V-comp between the liner and the door panel when assembled. The panel itself is laminated wood, two inches thick at it's highest and one inch thick at the thinner points. I promise, it doesn't vibrate even at full volume... LOL

So lemme see... I guess the bottom line is that my truck:

Is judged with ears and not eyes (thank goodness  ). In fact, most of the judges close their eyes during the judging of each track... it's kind of strange when you watch, but the idea is to eliminate as many senses as possible and let only your ears make the call.

Is not an SPL rig. Even though I've got two 12 inch T3 Audio TS subs below your feet (one on each side), they only play from 30 Hz down and are EQ'd so they blend with the rest of the sound stage.

So there you have it, straight from the old horses mouth. I'm not in the least bit offended or anything like that, by the way. Just wanted to let you guys know the straight skinny on that particular event and the shaggy door pic... LOL.

Post any questions you may have, and I'll try to answer right away ...

Brooksie

Nah I wasn't trying to "offend" or ever discredit the owner of that truck (You I see :P ). It was more a "why did they word it like this" ..."best of show" if it was not a "flashy showstopper" install.

Thier bad not urs in the least.

Congrats on winning in the SQ comp I know that is tough stuff as I 've given it a go when it was avail to enter here locally and best I could muster was a tie for 3rd.

were you talking about this system?

Look like it.

I'm guessin that's ur truck.

I think the judges were "wowed" by the drive-bys with the doors open.

I din't realize it was a chevy but yes that looks like it unless I'm confusing more than one truck.

Those Powerbass subs sure killed me on the mic that day-1st comp I didnt take a trophy.

There was also a smaller white truck that day w/ 4-12w7's in a cut thru- I think- owned by an asian guy and THAT one seemed pretty loud.

Edit-Do you have a bigger version of the 1st pic?

It doesnt look like I remember the amp rack-I thought the yellow top batts were tucked under a cover and I really remember more wires showing that in that pic unless it's been redone since.

damn this was like 2 years ago, alot has changed since back then

Well just to make sure I'm not choking on my own foot too bad here-

was THAT^^ the condition it was in at the above mentioned event? or was the battery/amp setup different?

I remember looking into a 3rd door/ext style truck and seeing a LOT more wires and dist. blocks on the floor and the yellow tops had some kind of "battery box" semi-enclosing them.

Am I thinkin of a diff ride?

Also at that show I was kinda pissed on the "best of show" judging because the judges wouldnt come look at my car. I had the doors/trunk open and once it got late enuff I had my neons all on inside and out and they were like "Oh we did the judging a long time ago"-but since they never left the "booth"/E-Z-UP where the mic equipment was, they didnt really see a lot of the cars at that show.

I guess I shoulda driven by with my doors and hatch open...and/or invest in some screens.

Welll Like I siad you still killed me on the TL but I stand by my claim that I think I shoulda won best of show that day.

If they had a "most showmanship" category, you had me-with the DOORS OPEN Drive-byes (although those did almost end up taking off one of the open doors-I saw some one close just before it would've collided w/ an suv)

But on purely install, I thought if ANYONE would be in the race with me it was that lil white truck w/ the JL's because his bed was decked out with quite a bit of gear and it looked good.

But to each his own I guess.

I bet it sounds really nice with the subs up front like that...but personally I can't stand how they look.

The amp rack is pretty nice and the mids prolly sound great although I'm not feelin the inverted mid woofer ...but what do I know-I have never won a championship anything.

1 Q:

What was the treatment underneath the subs? I know they're not just hangin free air under there...?

The underside of the subs was free-air (with a sheetmetal splashguard) for most of the season. For IASCA finals, I whipped up sort of an A-periodic enclosure impregnated with silicon rain-repellant to keep them dry. Both methods kept the subs dry and allowed them to breathe free-air below.

LOL @ the looks of the subs... yep, I was gonna do a really nice chrome cover over them, but alas... I ran out of money and had to make do with what I had laying around in the shop at the time. the resulting amoeba-look was a lot of fun to joke with everybody at the shows... good times!

They did sound good though! I could bump the crossover up into the 70 hz range before it started to get obvious that the subs were in that location, and frankly that was more from the vibration transferring to the seat of your pants and the air blowing on your legs than from sound alone.
