Grelko Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 I'm going to paint my van black, should I call the DMV or my insurance company etc. and let them know that I'm painting it a different color? Lets say, if I got pulled over, could I get a ticket since the color of the paint would no longer match what it says it supposed to be. If the police would look up my van, it would come back as a white chevy, not black. I figure I'll call just to be on the safe side, but I was just wondering if anyone knew about this for sure. edit- Nevermind, I was suprised I actually found what I was looking for online this time lol You must notify DMV within 5 days if you: Are cited for a traffic violation, sell or transfer your vehicle, or paint your vehicle a different color second edit- better information about it below. DMV.org should have all the information you need. or. DMV.state. "abbreviation of state you live in" .us California would be DMV.state.Ca.us or DMV.Ca.gov theres a couple different websites for it. Found a couple different answers online. Let the DMV know if you paint your vehicle for protection against vandalism, theft etc. So if the police are looking for it, they'll know what color to look for. Another is saying that the DMV checks the Vin# so you don't have to tell them if you paint it.
