Love the vintage Punch 45. I always like the "Dracula" RF logo design better than the "Diamond R" they started using in the late 80's. I've benched one of these Gen 1 Punch 45's and seem to recall actual power output of around 40w/ch at 4 ohms and around 110W bridged at 4 ohms. Quite a bit more than rated! I'm hoping to have some time to work on my old school boombox as I'm planning on using one of these with either a chrome or gold Perfect Interface fan shroud.

Awesome, can't wait to see it!

Love the homemade boom boxes.

i'll take some pics, test this guy out and post up some results.

Guts and power results from the "Dracula Punch45" :D

I also connected the amp up to a resistor bank at 4.14ohms and did a power test.

Source was an Alpine CDA-9851 using the SMD DD-1 40Hz 0dB Test Track.

I tuned the amp with the DD-1 and was able to max out the gains with a clean signal from the Alpine.

Then I turned up the Bass Boost knob until the signal started to distort, according to the DD-1.

As you can see on the amp's cover, its rated at 22.5W/CH @ 4ohms.

It lists 35W/CH @ 2ohms so bridged @ 4ohms you would expect 70W.

Well, here's the bridged output to the resistor bank:

RFG1Punch45Bridged414ohm40Hz.jpg

Measurement "P6" gives a clean 95W! :woot:

This little guy is probably capable of more output since I just quickly wired up the resistor bank with alligator jumpers.

I also used some simple wire jumpers to tap into the molex plug for the speaker outputs.

If I got a proper molex adapter and thicker wires to improve the loading connection, I'm sure she'll do more.

Nice! It's nice to have someone else testing so we can compare. I tested two of my P45 1st gens and we are not too far off. Both were just over 100w at 4 ohms bridged (102 and 105) and around 38w/ch at 4 ohms (and 55-58w/ch at 2 ohms). I did these tests a while back using my Velleman HPS-50 o'scope and resistive loads, didn't have the DD-1 yet. Our differences are negligible, but since I could only go by the scope, it may have been slightly more than 1% THD.

See my re-birth sheet below. The "max" power output was just a comparison to how some mfg's rate their amps these days and was the maximum power the amp put out (hard clipping).

Where are you guys sourcing your resistors from? I know big d switched over not to long ago to 4 separate 4 ohm banks made from 16 ohm wire wound resistors

I bought four of these off of eBay

resistor.jpg

Mine are 16 ohms. Paralleled together, I get about a 4 ohm load.

Each one is good for 100W, but can take a good bit more for a short burst.

I forget the expect price but they're fairly cheap.

If you cooled them you could probably really hammer them if needed.
