Cabin Size Question

I drive a 1991 Astro Van and it just seems quiet to a certain point. I still have the loudest system in town so it's hard to ask anyone locally about the subject, they keep telling me I'm loud enough.

Not that long ago I traded a guy even and ended up with an Incriminator Audio Death Penalty 15 and a Hifonics Brutus 1600. The amps small for that sub I know. But my point being, I got demo'd in his car (Ford Focus hatchback) and it was super fantastic sounding, even a bit painful to the ears. It even did hairtricks which I did not expect.

Anyways, later it was all said and done and in my van positioned properly and wired exactly the same with the same amp setting and all that jazz. It just didnt sound good AT ALL. No matter what I tweaked it just sounded very bad across pretty much the whole spectrum of music.

On my little walmart meter it read about 10 db less in my van than in his car which is a lot.

Any explanations regarding the cabin space that I dont know about, because I feel like I should be about twice as loud as I currently am and it's just the vehicle.

first off, scosche bass meter sucks donkey balls.

onto the main reason, the larger the cabin air space, the harder it is to move all that air around. this is what i like to call "acoustics are a bitch". what sounds fantastic in one persons car can very sell sound like utter crap in another car.

explain though, how did it sound like crap?

also, the box placement (along with which way the woofer and port are firing) may affect the sound/performance too.

For consistantsy's sake Ill continue to talk of the Death Penalty. I had it sub and port both facing the rear about 2 inches from my back doors. As far as sound quality, it was seriously moving some air but making very little noise. The only "loud" peaks that were comming out of it were around the 40 and 50 hz region, which is extremely narrow response likely just due to the vehicle. Bottom line, sounded like crap. I'm not sure how else to put it.

My friend seems to think that lining the inside of my van with MDF will make it about 10x louder. But I have seen EXOcontraltos videos and he didnt seem to have a problem in his van with no interior and bare metal all around with SQ or SPL. Kinda weird

I think 2 inches from the back doors might be a little too close. Also try pointing it up and move it around and try and find a good spot for it.
