Need help building a pc

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I need help building my first PC.

I honestly haven't a clue where to start, so I'm hoping someone here will be able to help my get the parts I need.

Budget is flexable, but I'd like to keep it under about $800.

As for what I want:

Processor: I want either an Intel i5 or i7, at least about 2.4GHz

Hard Drive: I want an SSD to put boot files on, so that can be small, but as for the HDD, I want anywhere from 500GB to 2TB, depending on the price.

RAM: At least 6GB, 8GB if it fits the budget.

Video card: Anything "mid-grade"

Sound card: doesn't matter to me.

Disk drive: Just a standard CD/DVD burner, don't need BluRay.

I also need HDMI out.

And since I know the question is coming, this will be used pretty much exclusively as a torrent box, Minecraft server, and IRC bot.

Any and all help is appreciated.

To be honest, hardest part about keeping this under $800 will be the large hard drive. But let me see what we can do =)

EDIT: While you wait, enjoy some Ylvis

wtf is lolcats?

I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers.

I was hoping for 150 :(.

I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt

Wait, just for clarification, this is pretty much gonna be a media/torrent/minecraft/etc. server. Never really used for much other than network I/O? Will you be using it as an HTPC or anything? hooking a TV up to it? Or just storage for lots of everything?

BLAM-O!

I hate to use some of the less impressive components here but it seems quite well balanced for what you're using it for. And it's still got 2 free RAM slots so future upgrades are always possible.

Case: NZXt Source 210 (I love this thing)

Total with shipping (to my house in Mass): $837.51

I tried to get it under $800 shipped but I hate cutting corners and getting weak power supplies or motherboards. It's a well-rounded machine and should do the job nicely.

If you HAD to get it to $800, get THIS POWER SUPPLY instead of the one I linked. It'll bring the shipped total down to $800.78. I'll send you the extra dollar through PayPal if you need :drinks:

its do able. im assuming you know of newegg? you should get 15-2600 if you dont plan on OC it'll save you money verse the 2500k, asus or gigabyte with onboard graphics. i only buy corsair memory but thats just me. 6gb in 2 cards should be easy to find on the cheap. as for SDD they are expensive but if you just go with a 40-60gb not too bad

and make sure you get a good HDD nothing is worse than long r/w times for media or transferring content.

and questions hit me up ive built 3 different PCs, one was just a basic number cruncher for my mom. then my buddies gaming PC, and im still adding to mine, got over 1100 into it right now not including monitor or input devices...

To expand on the usage:

It will be primarily a seedbox. I wanted a large drive simply for storage of what I download while I seed, it will NOT be used as an HTCP, I just use my PS3/Xbox 360 for watching my movies.

Also, thanks for the suggestions so far, guys.

edit-

I also forgot to mention, I would like to have at least 2 USB 3.0 ports.
