DODGE-BASSHEAD25 Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 I know this is probably one of the most rookie questions to ask, but what exactly akes higher rms amps louder. i have been looking for a higher wattage amp than my Kicker ZX300.1 to power my 10" L7's but i kept wondering. If i just turn up the gain on my amp wouldnt that make it louder. Or does that just make it distorted. Maxim Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 An amplifier is designed to amplify (aptly named) an electrical signal. An audio aplifier takes in a low-current, low-voltage signal and amplifies it into a higher amperage and higher voltage signal using an external power source (wall outlet at home, car batteries). The hardware, design, and circuitry of the amplifier determine how far it can amplify the signal before distorting the signal (adding noise/clipping/etc.) Now a small amp rated at 300 watts uses much less beefy circuitry than one rated at 3000 watts. That is because you need more input amperage from the power source and heavier-duty circuitry in order to amplify a signal that much more. You can turn your gain knob up to full and you may get more that 300 watts out of your amp but it will be distorted to hell. Buy a larger, proper amp if you need more power. A general rule of thumb is to upgrade your car's electrical system if you plan on going over 1000 watts in order to feed more power to a hungrier amp (bigger alternator and/or more batteries). It takes power to make power wtf is lolcats? I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers. I was hoping for 150 . I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt
