Building a box for a dub 6 tomorrow

Alright here's the deal, I use Craigslist every now and again to advertise box building. A guy contacted me today wanting to know if I could build him a ported box for two 12's and how much it would cost him, so I asked what kind of subs they were to get a basic idea and he gave me a very strange combination... A Pioneer Premier Championship Series, and a JL Audio 12W6. I told him I would build his box, but I don't know how well the turn out would be for mismatched subs so I came up with this idea.

Build the box for just the dub 6. I got on JLaudio.com to find box recommendations, and surprisingly (shows how much I get on JLaudio.com ) the site gave me every recommendation I needed for a box build. Outer dimensions, internal volume, ideal wood thickness, inner port width, height, and depth as well as the tuning frequency! He's dead set on this JL after numerous attempts to talk him into a DC or Sundown sub no matter what, so I figured I would build a box to correct specs for a dub 6 and have it be just as "loud" as both subs in there.

I rounded up a total cost for parts for him to make a deposit for me to pick up the supplies. I'm picking up a 3/4" x 4' x 8' sheet of MDF ($31.98), and a tube of Liquid Nail construction grade adhesive/sealant ($4.98). My total came out to $36.96 without tax. What should I charge him for the actual build for a single dub 6?

Well I used to charge a flat rate depending on the size of the box and the amount of drivers going in. Found out the hard way I was losing money that way. It only takes me about 3 hours to completely assemble a medium-sized box and around 24 hours to let the sealants and adhesives fully cure before anything is dropped in.

When I build boxes for friends, I charge 100 bucks flat for materials and labor and if they buy material it's a flat fee of 60. If you charge to much then they'll just go get it done at a shop. You just have to sell them into it saying it's custom to the car and subwoofer and it's custom "tuned". The more you tell them then the more they want it because it hits them as " I got a custom box that's custom tuned" sick sheiitttt!!!!. Hope that helps.

That's what I was thinking around, I was thinking about breaking out the router and using the good 'ol roundover bit to flush the outside of the box and around the slot port for a more "custom look". Maybe do a little bit of rounding on the corner and the end of the second port length for a little more worksmanship because most of our shops around here start a custom built box @ around $180 - $220. Just did a little more guesstimating with a price. I don't personally know this kid, but I rounded up the total cost of parts (MDF, wood glue, spray adhesive, and carpet/covering material) to $55.97 without tax. After calling a couple of shops, the cheapest sub-specific 12" box I found was $218.99. I was thinking about $80 for labor, putting my total build cost at $135.97, roughly $85 cheaper than the cheapest local shop. Seem like a good deal to you guys?
