You gotta stop thinking that the gain is a volume knob. When you turn it up 3/4 that doesn't mean it's half power. If it's setup properly it will putout some nice power. But if you got crappy electrical and bass boost on and volume maxed on the HU it won't be loud. Just sound like crap. What are your settings on your HU?

Rest In Peace mother.

my treble is turned all the way up because the bass overpowers my mids and highs

Clipping is basically a bad signal from the amp to the sub. Chances are that bass boost toasted a coil or fried a lead. Turn it down. In the future I'd go with a sub that can handle a little more abuse anyway and I don't know your elecricals but I'd upgrade those as well of you haven't.

a clipped signal can come from the headunit as well.. you need to have everything set up in sync together in order for a system to run properly.. the amp gains can be fine and if you mess with the headunit..well it can end badly :( ive set gains for people and they turn the bass up on the headunit and something ends up frying

Amen to this. Im still having problems with my setup. And I have it pretty decent now.. but when I go turning my shit up on the headunit and bass knob I get my burning smell back. Shit pisses me off too.
