iceman1575 Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 Stupid question. I have a Sony H/U w/ 2v preouts, going into a Clarion EQ with 7v preouts. If I switched to a headunit with higher volt preouts (4+ volts), would it improve anything? My subs always sounded "thin" (definitely loud & deep, electrical was fine, never dipped below 12-13v). Or does it not matter since the EQ preouts are 7v anyways? Thanks. POTATO!
Notoriousj76 Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 I ran an alpine CDE100 with 2volt preouts into my kicker KQ9 EQ and was okay.... Not sure what the output was on the EQ but I still had to run it through a line driver to get a strong signal to the subs... My gain and bass boost on the amp was all the way down and still moving air in the window of an astro van. I would try measuring your output with a mutimeter to see what your getting. Rms output on the RCA's is way lower than you think unless you have it cranked up. Just be sure that your amp RCA's will take 7 volts. Wouldn't wanna blow the inputs on the amp. Basically.... to answer your question, it would make it louder presumably. Secondly, if your subs sound "thin" it might be the enclosure tuning since you are still getting deep and loud. A box I had made for an hcca couldnt reproduce bass above 40 hz without sounding like crap. But moved hair.

I used several different boxes, different tuning/air space, and they were right, the subs just sounded like they weren't really getting all the signal/power they needed...Maybe I'm just craving more... Quick edit: I've been using an AP1500, which they said used 0.2-5V input, so it may not have been the preouts come to think of it, but I didn't know if it would help the efficiency & clarity of the signal... I haven't changed brands, I like the simplicity of the Sony's. Looks like I'm going to have to get a line driver... POTATO!
