I ran my wire through a hole I cut with a core bit. Rubber grommets are cheap, find one. Don't expose your wire to all of the elements outside of the vehicle if you don't have to. Not I'm not "kidding" you. Wire inside of a car will last MUCH longer and take MUCH less(if any) abuse that wire exposed to elements.
