If it was hurting from even a pellet grazing you there'd be blood.... its possible that his face wasnt hit with any of the pellets, but burned by the muzzle flash instead. This, and I know with some things, even if you aren't hurt, if something like that happens where it's so unlikely to have not got injured, your brain will automatically tell your body to respond as if it was hurt. I've dropped an open knife on my foot, and before I looked down, it felt as if my entire foot had been cut open, and the longer I waited to look, the more it hurt. Until I checked and saw that I wasn't cut, it just kept getting worse. It's the way the brain works.
