Adding a second alt (help)

When adding a second alternator does the second alternator need to be a 4 pin connector to function properly? Or can any alternator work?

It would be easier to get a 4-pin if your running a dual alt. Are you planning on running the second alt with the stock alt together?

I would rather run the secondary alt independently to my second battery and just operate as a separate electrical system for audio

That's what most of us PCM controlled GM guys do. If you get a dual alt bracket kit they send a 4pin plug and you have a relay and stuff, but only have to wire one wire into the fuse box and that is a alt turn on.

Also I assumed you have a 5.3L, but it's the same for all the Silverado's. Also I believe the 2011 kit works for 2012's, but double check.

So what would hookup to the 2 pin alt if it comes with a 4 pin plug? I don't understand how that will work

When I originally talked to dc and told them about the alternator I'm trying to use they said it would be fine but I pm'ed Kyle and he says the alternator may need to be switched to a 4 pin connector I'm just wondering if it's possible to use my 2 pin alt that I've had as the second alt. it's an iraggi I got a few years ago to replace the stock 140amp in my 06 Chevy so I pulled it off and put the stock back in when I traded up for my new truck so I have the iraggi I want to use in addition to the stock and I'd prefer to run them separately. Just go second alt to second battery to amp

Found a local place that will change my alternator to a 4 pin for cheap, think I'm just gonna do that and make it easier
