Does tuning and port area drop? If you want to bring the tuning frequency back up, make the port shorter. You would be guessing on mechanical power handling. The change in tuning alone could change the power handling. Port area is (most commonly) determined based on what? Box size. Otherwise, everyone would use the same size port no matter the Vb. Where am I thinking wrong with this logic? Port area is related to air velocity though the port, which is related to tuning frequency, cone area, and Xmax. Think of this: I put a BTL 18 in a 6 cuft box tuned to 32 Hz and feed it 4000 watts. Do you think a cheap 18 with 5mm of Xmax on 100 watts in that same box would need the same amount of port area? Or can you explain why the same sub in 5 cuft vs. 6 cuft with the same tuning frequency would need a different amount of port area? Somehow these became the law that everyone lives by. Now many people think if you have over 16 sqin per cuft it is only for SPL and will not play music correctly, or smaller ports extend the frequency response higher, and the list goes on.
