LED light suggestions

I know many people on here have LEDs in their vehicles to show off your work and I was hoping to do that too. Here's what I want to accomplish:

1 LED strip in the port - controlled by a SPST switch

2-4 LED strips in the trunk - turned on when the trunk opens

Variable light colors

I was looking at the 5050 SMD LED lights with the remote control and I like that, but I'm not sure that this fits my application because of the on and off feature that the unit has

I was looking for suggestions on what other people have done in the past, I couldn't find much in the way of LED wiring in the electrical section

Thanks in advance, I want this to be my first good looking system. My last one was just to get a grasp of what I was doing with car audio basics
