I think it would be safe to turn the gains up on your amp up about 3/4 until you get a DD-1 and find distortion. That's what I'm doing anyway until I can get a hold of my buddy's DD-1 or osciloscope. Of course the distortion can vary from amp to amp, depending on the brand and quality. My Sundown SAZ-1500D should have less distortion than my Audiopipe AP-1500D, but I haven't had the chance to DD-1 either of them yet.
