rmk818 Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 I have an amp rated at 4 ohm and my sub is putting out 6 ohms. Will this be a problem for the sub? Will it be a problem for the Amp? I can not add another sub there is no room. Additionally, how can I tell if my sub is bad? It is a Dual voice coil.

rmk818 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 The sub is a JL 10w6v2 and is supposed to have an eight or 2 ohm (depinding on wiring) load. When I put my multimeter to check the ohms, it is only putting out 6 ohms or 1.5 ohms. My amp can handle 2 or 4 ohm loads. The readings were taken at the ends of the wire where they connect to the amp (disconnected form the amp). There is no corrosion on the terminals and the speaker wiring is 14 gauge. There was some light corrosion on the top of the magnet area (white powder) but that was cleaned off.

If your amp is 2 ohm stable, wire the sub coils in parallel for 2 ohms (what you are measuring as 1.5). When Alternating Current is applied, the voice coil becomes an inductor (that is what creates the magnetic field that reacts with the permanent magnet to cause the cone to move). The inductance changes the resistance, and this resistance changes with frequency.
