REVOofRustler Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 All you need to do is find out the area of whatever it is and then multiply that by how tall it is. For a cylinder, the cross section is a circle. You'll need to find the radius of the circle (length from the center of the circle to the outside edge). The formula for the area of a circle is Pi*radius^2. So what you'll need to do is square the radius and multiply it by pi (roughly 3.14). This number is your cross sectional area. All you need to do now is multiply the area by the height! Example: You have a dowel with a radius of 2 inches that is 12 inches tall. 2 squared is 4, and 4*Pi is about 12.56. So the cross sectional area of the dowel is 12.56 square inches. Then you multiply that by the height (12). So 12.56*12=150.72 This means that the volume, or displacement, of that dowel is 150.72 cubic inches. 45's essentially create a triangle in the corner of the box. To find the area of this triangle, you just need to find the length of one side of the triangle (from the corner of the box to the outside edge of the 45). Square this number, and then divide by 2. This is your cross sectional area. Then multiply by height. Example: You have a 45 which is 3 inches from the corner of the box to the outside edge of the 45. It has a height of 8 inches. 3 squared is 9, and 9 divided by 2 is 4.5. The cross sectional area of the 45 is 4.5 square inches. Multiply the area by height, giving you 4.5*8 which equals 36. The displacement of your 45 is 36 cubic inches! Hopefully all this makes sense and is helpful! Edit: Also, keep in mind that you don't need to include the displacement of 45's in the port when you use torres.
