2005 PT Cruiser daily driver - bass options?

Hi all !

Longtime listener, first time caller :drink40:

I have a 2005 PT Cruiser that currently is running a 1000 watt Hifonics (powering a Kicker L7 truck box) and a Kenwood 4-channel amp (powering Polk audio db6501 separates and Polk 5x7's on the rear pillars). The system has a really potent low extension for just one 10" sub - the L7 truck box is LOUD for what it is - but I know I can do better.

Currently I have 2 Polk Audio db104 subs sitting in my closet, quite literally collecting dust. They used to be in a bandpass box in my other car, which I no longer have.

Here's what I'd like to do, tell me if I'm insane -- I'd like to engineer (preferably with your guys' expert help, as I wouldn't be able to do it alone) a 6th order bandpass box for the trunk, housing the 2 Polk db104's in a push-pull config. Speakers facing together, ports facing towards the rear of the vehicle. Sort of a "mini-wall" I suppose. I know the box will be wide and tall, but since the Cruiser has a vertical trunk, space will allow.

I picked a 6th order because it seemed to be flat and efficient (in its frequency range, anyway). I know that a 4th or other order will likely be easier to do, and if that is my only option, then that's fine by me. However, keep in mind I'd like to use this as my daily driver.

The L7 truck box that I have in there is very compact, but it lacks the low end punch that I grew accustomed to with the two db104's in the other bandpass box. I don't know if it's an electrical system thing, or an acoustic thing. I ran a 40 Hz tone to it and woofer porn like crazy. I even ran a 20 Hz tone to it and the woofer flexes and the port can do a micro hair trick, impressively.

My trunk dimensions are 39 inches across, by 18.5 trunk-to-backseat. I believe the vertical space is approx 16 inches from the floor to the bottom of the removable cargo bay lid, which I'd like to keep for cargo security reasons. Like I mentioned above, daily driver.

db104 specs --

resonant freq 37 Hz

Xmax linear 0.3 in / 7.5 mm

Xmax mechanical 1.0 in / 25.4 mm

LE 1.85 mH

SD 54.25 sq in / 350 sq cm

Vas 0.85 cu ft / 24.0 L

Qts 0.57, Qes 0.62, Qms 7.0

That's for one - how to multiply for TWO, I'm not really sure; or do we make two separate enclosures.

OR -- would I be better off keeping the L7 and maybe integrating it a different way?

Thanks for your help ..

Thanks for the welcome, cablguy184 and Mike-2u :drink40:

I'm looking forward to getting started on some sort of build. Does purplehaze check in kind of often, or do you recommend a PM?

On a temporarily more somber note -- Seeing as today ~is~ September 11, I wouldn't imagine too many folks being online.

My condolences to all who have lost friends or family members on this day in 2001. The States will forever be United ... And we will not forget.

So seeing as I haven't seen PurpleHaze online here recently .. anyone have any options for me to consider?

To recap simply, 2 @ 10-inch woofers going in the trunk of a PT Cruiser, with hopeful room for groceries. Would a 4th order bandpass be "okay" and higher orders be "better" as far as low-low's and efficiency?

General opinions are of course welcome, doesn't just have to be PT Cruiser folks. I'm even up for mothballing the 2 @ 10's again and upgrading to something larger possibly. But I ~would~ like to keep my lower trunk if possible ...

Steve? Any grand vision for my Cruiser that you might have in mind? 8)
