The Saturn: 3 15's, AQ20 tons of fiberglass (Death-Horn) and low-lowz

Recommended Posts

The goodies just arrived today....10 gallons of resin and more mat than can be used with that amount of resin of different weights...along with the 150lb's of play sand I picked up a couple days ago.

The game plan isn't set in stone (well, resin) quite yet because my ceiling is so freakin weak after I started tearing into parts on the roof...so I may be getting crafty with some stuff and brainstorming on exactly how I'm going to get it done...may wait until I can get it over to my buddy's and have him weld up a pretty tight frame then cloth+glass the frame to seal everything and then start layering up glass 1"+ thick and then start mixing sand+resin and start pouring it in above that until I reach approx factory roof height then bodyfill and sand to shape and hit it with some paint to look fairly normal

Anyways, onto the damn pics...

What i had to start with...lots of stuff still on the roof that i dont want there...

Beasted the sunroof track right outa there...

^And yes, the pour i did before all of this was horrible...cracked like a mofo. With the play sand on this next batch and being more careful this shouldnt be happening again...

And a good bit of the stuff torn out but I still want the old angle-iron support to be gone, its rusted from the sunroof leaking and just not very welcome...

I'll probably be adding another cross-support or two spanning between the car's frame and also smaller pieces connecting the front of the cage to the car's frame near the top of the windshield (wont be getting close enough to worry about crackage from the heat, tho)...then I'll be sealing everything off and start building up the fiberglass :):D

Alright, finally some progress with this. Got a sheet glued to the bottom of the cage and wetted down with resin. Once it's cured the layering will begin and this roof will start to really take shape :):D

Prepped the surrounding area with a wire wheel to clean things up and remove the foam left everywhere.

Sheet glued underneath...

Ofcourse, I start to wet it and everything sags a bit so I went out and got some clothes pins to hold everything up tighter until it's cured...not too worried about it messing the flatness of the cabin-side up, it will be bodyfilled and sanded to shape once things get going anyways...

But here are some pics before it happens again...

Playsand...fun...

After that all cured I mixed up a few more small batches with shredded-up mat added into the mix...it's thicker than crap and is going to be strong once cured

Adding 3oz mat ontop of the horn, will be layering up mat a handful more layers, then connecting the cage area to the top of the horn then probably 8-10 more layers of mat ontop of that then I will, again, be mixing resin, sand, and mat and pouring :)

Alright, I got an old tshirt CA-glued connecting the top of the horn to the caged area...

IMG_0306_zpsf7cf5b8e.jpg

IMG_0308_zps49a89431.jpg

Laying down a handful of layers of mat after the tshirt's resin was cured...

IMG_0309_zps7308b5ed.jpg

IMG_0310_zpsce3ca694.jpg

Then I had a good bit of resin still in my mix bucket so I mixed some sand and shredded up mat into it and poured it on...
