SnowDrifter Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 Going to pull the trigger and get my rims powder-coated, but like anything - there is more to it than meets the eye. Like the amount of black finishes there are to choose from, and the place I am going to will coat to a specified thickness (in mils) Like anything, I like to be educated before I go into it so I can at least speak with the business on an intelligent level about the subject. So how does powdercoating do around sharp corners? Should I file them down a bit before hand? What type of black do you guys think would most closely match plastidip in terms of how it looks? What about thickness? I only want to do this once, so I'm not sure how thick I should request in order for it to last 100k or more. I wash the car at least once every other week, and clean out the inside of the rims when I rotate the tires every 3,000 mi. So I want matte, but not something that will hold dirt like my plastidip did. 98GCLimited Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 I powdercoated for 4 years at an old job I had. If you want a matte black its going to be more prone to holding dirt than a satin or gloss its just not as smooth of a surface. Gloss gets tiny scratches in the gloss very easily so I definitely dont recommend it for wheels. There are so many different powders out there to choose from though just look at a bunch of q panels or samples at the place. If they are a good shop they should have hundreds of actual metal sample panels powdercoated with different powders to look at and see if you can find what you like. As far as mil thickness you dont want it too thick or it will tend to be "orange peely" basically it wont look flat and smooth it will be a little bumpy like an orange peel looks.
