So i am using the 12volt site to check the volume of a cylinder http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp#cyl but i am am unsure of what properties to put in. The diameter and height i could figure out but its the thickness i can't get. Do i put zero if this is going to be for wooden dowels or is there a value i need to put in there?

From what i can tell if you enter "0" for thickness it treats it as a solid object. Give me a minute and i will test it wit some wall thicknesses. Also, that calculator rounds up just a bit. I compared what it gave to what sketchup told me with a couple different diameter pieces and thats what i have so far.

ok, if you enter a thickness it only figures what the internal volume of the cylinder is. For instance a cylinder with a 1.5" diameter and a 1/4" thick wall @ 15" is .00674 cuft.

So there you have it.

Me, i just use sketchup to get all my volumes on odd ball stuff like that.

Thank you for taking the time to figure that out... then i guess my volume needs to be updated. How exactly do you figure the volume from the sketchup? I am currently drawing up a box but would like to get the proper displacement of the dowel pieces.

Just draw the circle at the diamater you want, so for a 1" dowel draw a circle and type in .5. Then select that circle with the arrow thing (far left one next to pencil). Make sure you have the inside of the circle selected and right click and choose area --> selection. Then multiply that value by the height for your cubic inches. divide by 1728 for cuft. if you need screen shots i can do that since i am super bored anyway.

This works for any shape object by the way.

lol i think i get it, but if you are that bored feel free to throw up that screen shot. Thanks a lot that helps me out big time.

edit: Thank you for that info again.... and also i figured it out if you use the 12volt cylinder calculator you would put diameter as 1" height what ever height you need and the thickness is 0 I did it both ways and i got about the same number. using 12volt using diameter 1" height 19.75 and thickness as 0 i get .00898 and using the sketch up method and the math involved i get .00887
