purplesyrup Posted June 4, 2013 Author Report Posted June 4, 2013 Someone on youtube did say i was stupid for using this method because the solder sucks up into the wire several inches, when the whole deal here, is the wire does not get hot like other methods and that could never happen, once the wire is inserted, you hold it there for a few seconds, then remove from heat, what i did in the video is how it should be done, this is the terminal from the video Here are pics of that terminal NOT sucking solder 2" up the wire as he stated, with the wire cut off about 1/8th of an inch past the terminal, (you can see the sliver of purple jasket)

Wicks Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 No doubt that this is pure awesomeness and it even caused me to run out a buy a new torch and solder for an upcoming project. But I can't help wonder how much resistance is created by drowning the OFC in solder compared to a good hydraulic compression crimper. I'm sure I'm over thinking it and this is fine and in any case, thank you to the OP for the video. Thoughts? Its going to be hard to tell without any real scientific testing I think I have the gear on hand to do this test. I would ask the electronics gurus out there to tell me how I can do this test accurately. I have good 12 ton compression crimpers and lugs as well as silver solder and lugs. All 1/0 ofc, solid copper lugs and a good fluke DMM. I'm assuming a good resistance and voltage drop test with a heavily load on the cable would suffice but how to generate a continuous stable load on the cable I would need help with. You'll need a precision 4-wire bench-top resistance meter to get an accurate reading. A regular DMM won't be able to read that low, plus the resistance of the leads causes interference as well. As far as a load test, a regular battery load tester may work. Just make sure the battery is fully charged before each test and the load tester is cool as temperature will probably affect the resistance. You'll want to verify the load tester is applying the exact same load each time.
