head unit or amp problem?

I just got a JL 1200.1 cheap off a guy, so I take out my VVME 1000.1 and put the JL 1200.1 in. thing is now with the JL I have to turn my volume on my head unit( jvc k-ds37) way to high for the bass to start hitting hard. before with my vvme I only had to turn my volume to 18 out of 50 for it to be loud and sound good. now I have to turn my head unit up to 37 out of 50 for the bass to be loud but at that volume my door speakers are about to die! I don't have a dd1 so I set the JL up to what the manual said to to. not sure on what to do now lol.. I don't know if its head unit or amp problem. this is what the amps manual has in it so this is what I did.

Input Sensitivity Level Setting

Following the directions below will allow the

installer to adjust the input sensitivity of each

amplifier channel pair simply and easily in just a

few minutes using equipment which is commonly

available in installation bays.

Necessary Equipment

• Digital AC Voltmeter

• CD with a sine-wave test tone recorded at

0 dB reference level in the frequency range

to be amplified for that set of channels

(50 Hz for subwoofer channels, 1 kHz for a

midrange application). Do not use attenuated

test tones (-10 dB, -20 dB, etc.).

The Nine-Step Procedure

1) Disconnect the speaker(s) from the

amplifier’s speaker output connectors.

2) Turn off all processing (bass/treble, loudness,

EQ, etc.) on the source unit, processors (if

used) and amplifier. Set fader control to center

position and subwoofer level control to 3/4 of

maximum (if used to feed the G-MAX).

3) Switch the “Input Voltage” switch to “Low”

and turn the “Input Sens.” control all the

way down.

4) Set the source unit volume to 3/4 of full

volume. This will allow for reasonable gain

overlap with moderate clipping at full volume.

5) Using the chart on this page, determine the target

voltage for input sensitivity adjustment according

to the nominal impedance of the speaker system

connected to the amplifier outputs.

6) Verify that you have disconnected the speakers

before proceeding. Play a track with an

appropriate sine wave (within the frequency

range to be amplified by the G-MAX) at 3/4

source unit volume.

7) Connect the AC voltmeter to the speaker output

connectors of the amplifier. Make sure you test

the voltage at the correct connectors (+ and –).

my guess is that either the gain is too low or you have the subs wired to a higher impedance. what do you have your subs wired too?

1 ohm , and I set my gain to 49v like the amp manual said to.

i think i now your problem. you set your gain at 3/4 of your volume on your head unit. they say 3/4 of volume because generally that is the maximum un-distorted volume. therefore, your subs will only be at full volume at 3/4 volume. re-set your gain at the volume the subs used to be very loud at (18) and that should solve your problems.
