get_us Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Ok, so I got this bad boy all hooked up tonight and decided to fire it up to test it out. I haven't hooked up my 2 runs of 1/0 gauge or to my D3100 battery. I only ran it for about 20 seconds then shut it off after all was well... Then I started to notice a strong smell. I was thinking maybe it's just it's brand new and that this is normal? This is my first new high output alt so i'm not sure what to expect. Can someone confirm this smell is normal? Thanks!
Guest DC Power Kyle Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Yep. They do smell. They can get as hot as 400F too. Don't touch
Guest DC Power Kyle Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 Err wait.. You didn't have any output wires hooked up? Don't plug the regulator in without any power wire.. You can have a bad time... Was the alternator hot?
get_us Posted September 28, 2013 Author Report Posted September 28, 2013 Ok, cool... so nothing to be worried about then... Thanks man!

get_us Posted September 28, 2013 Author Report Posted September 28, 2013 What sort of a smell was it? kinda of a burnt kinda smell.... kinda hard to describe... Did I fuck up?
Guest DC Power Kyle Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 You could have damaged something by having the alternator shoot amperage through the blue wire into the regulator and blew it... There was nowhere for the current to go. Only way to know is to finish hooking it up and see if it works.

The instructions said that if the harness came with a blue wire to hook it up with the red wire too?
