Is a 270 amp alternator enough?

And in you analogy of the wattage formula, remember that amperage pulled from a battery can only be multiplied by the voltage available. If it is below your charging voltage then your alt isn't keeping up so your output number drops. So your example of 900A x 14.4V = 12,960 W is the power the amp receives, not what it puts out.

Good thread, good conversation. I like it.

That's true about the voltage dropping, what I was getting at was that you were considering the wrong amperage for that equation. Even if you want to factor in the voltage drop it'd still be 900A*12.0V=10,800 watts before efficiency and all that good stuff.

And I get what you're saying, but to answer the OP's original question-yes, a 270 is enough especially considering that's all you can fit in the vehicle lol. You just need to compensate with a bigger reserve.

As for what you're saying about the reserve only making much of a difference when the car's off and you're playing it does the same exact thing when the cars on and playing. The only difference is that you have a 'charger' charging them as you drain them. It just doesn't keep up with the drain 100%. But you do have more time to play when you have a bigger reserve regardless of the car being off or being on and alternator charging a fraction of what's being drained.

Yeah, that's good that that's all I need for now! So my to-do list just got a bit larger with 2 more batteries but hey, its all in the game. I was hopping that by the end of next year I could re-build the wall for 3 SP4 18's but I don't the the alt will be up to that challenge and the batteries I will need will probably exceed my space.

iChris! I just realized you have an '03 Cavalier also! that's awesome! There's a guy who used to be around Indianapolis Indiana with 3 18's in his '03 Cavalier and that car was my inspiration haha

I think I finally just realized and understand what rockford's saying lol. He's right about there being a limit at which adding more batteries gives you a diminishing amount of benefit. But honestly before you buy more batteries either buy an SMD VM-1 voltmeter or 2 cheap Stinger volt meters (that way if 1 stops working you'll know). I would not feel safe at all running any equipment without having an in-dash voltmeter. Hell, I don't even feel comfortable driving around like I am right now with no voltmeter even though I have everything ripped out lol

I'm working on walling off 4 12 inch Zcons on my DC 9k at 1 ohm haha. It's a ways away but yeah man Cavalier Crew for life! 185k miles and running strong!

The only sad part right now is that I don't have a good way to get the volt meters wired back to the amps or rear batteries. The wall left 0 space for any additional wiring because I cut the front baffle to the exact space of my car and the rear is sealed at the trunk also.

haha hell yeah! next year I'm either doing 3 Fi SP4 18's or 3 CT Sounds EXO 15's I'm most likely going to be upgrading my amps to CT Sounds 7k's. I'm only at 72k miles though but I probably drive it hard enough that its equivalent to 120k+

Front battery. It's better than nothing. I had my wake up call when my Stinger stopped working and I didn't realize it, my 9k started going into protect and I freaked the hell out. Never again lol...

Yeah I suppose I'll start wiring one of those in tomorrow morning. Reminds me of when I had my 2 Hifonics 2k's running my Solo-X 18. One of them we couldn't get to come out of protect...
