Bass Blockers? Setup question about HU and Xovers

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm looking into doing a build for a friend. Not completely sure what's going on the install list because a few things have to be measured and remeasured, but the plan is 2 12"s in the trunk, a headunit, and maybe crossovers and/or new component speakers. My questions are, what is a good entry-level HU that is relatively cheap but still has enough features, especially iPod connectivity (I'm looking for a harness to keep the steering wheel buttons too, but I can probably find that myself). The bigger question here is if I should upgrade the speakers in the doors or just try out these things called Bass Blockers which are pretty much just a low-pass filter. The stock speakers (component tweet and mid in each door) distort around half-way up on the stock HU. I'm hoping the new HU will help get more out of those speakers, and if those bass blockers really work then I think I should be okay. What's the professional opinion out there though, should I try just the HU and Bass Blockers, or go with the sure thing and pick up two component sets and just let the wallet bite the bullet

Look at Clarion for the HU. Also deff replace the stock door speakers, they all suck. The Clarion (great SQ receivers) will give you all the options you need and you can get great deals on Amazon. Even though you will have all the crossover features you need on the HU, i Still recommend using Bass blockers on all your component speakers. Look at the speaker specs and get the appropriate bass blockers to match them.

Alright, looks like that's a pretty easy decision to make, thanks guys. The other thing is that is the stock or whatever new HU didn't have hpf/lpf would be that I think I'd have to buy a bass blocker for each individual door component, so that would be $80 of little filters going into this car... truthsayer (lol like the name) which Clarion HU were you thinking of in particular? Also, will running nicer component speakers mean that I should get an amp for them, or will the power from the HU be enough to combat the pair of 12"s that will be in the trunk? Also, any suggestions for component systems that come with xovers? Thanks guys
