When tuning an amp you're gonna leave the bass boost alone (if your amp comes with one), subsonic will depend on tuning of your box and sub parameters but most people new to car audio should set it around 20-25 Hz. Now as for low pass (assuming its a sub amp) a good common ground is 80 Hz but some people will go as high as 100-120 Hz again all depending on your set up. Now for the gain. What you're listening for is the change in pitch of the sub as you turn the gain up. When you hear the sub go from a low rumble to a higher pitched click you're clipping. Some will obviously explain it different but when you hear it you'll know. Now I do have to recommend you use an O-scope or a DD1 for tuning an amp but if you can not get a hold of one of afford one, tuning by ear will work. Just make sure when you hear the change in pitch that you lower the gain down to where it was before you heard the change in pitch. Then you just need to keep an eye on the system as a whole, mainly voltage and clip indicators are going to tell you if something is wrong. Most likely when you clip your voltage will be affected pretty bad.
