what makes a sub rated as a sq sub to spl sub.

friends say my type R is a spl sub but I think its a mix of the 2 depending how you build the box they way I look at it.

but in real terms what makes any sub sq to spl.

and how can you tell if the subwoofer is build strong to do its job it says it can?

most of the time spl subs require a ported enclosure.. type Rs can be used in a sealed or ported enclosure and also some sundown subwoofers. subs that work well in a sealed box are more on sq side I believe ..type Rs sound good ported and sealed..so sql in a way lol

I would disagree. Just because a sub requires a ported enclosure does not mean its a spl sub. For example i have a soundqubed HDC3 12 and it can only be used in a ported box or a 6th order bandpass box but it still sounds amasing when it comes to SQ. I feel it is the specs that can tell if a sub is more bassed for a sq setup vs spl or even sql. Just because a sub can be used in a ported and sealed enclosure also does not mean SQL. the type r could have great spl potental by being in a 4th order bandpass. also in the same box just tuned different it can also have a sq potental. But i still tay its more of the specs of the sub that shows sq vs spl for a sub.

2012 Chevy sonic1xSQ HDC3 12 D2RF R1200d

140 square foot of Q-Mat(soon to be installed)

140.2Db sealed on the dash with TL

142 DB sealed on the dash with another meter (was dead on with the TL at a show i was at)

141 on music.

Lots of woofers can get loud (SPL) but not all woofers reproduce the frequency as intended (SQ).... but you are correct the sub enclosure does come into play with a SQ Vs. SPL application. Woofers are not all created equal some woofers and the easiest way to have the best of both worlds is to use the manufacture recommended enclosure specs (Most manufacturers do actually test their products... Some don't). You can determine computer optimum box specs from TS Parameters but they truly do not follow real life car applications. Also keep in mind if you are looking for SQ the amplifier and power supply make a huge difference in the actual signal going to the speaker! -Chris
