So I'm just going to vinyl wrap the radio trim and the piece below flat black and see how it goes. If I don't like it, vinyl is cheap and I can always try again. CA Glue some threaded inserts on the back of the panel and use those screw holes already in the screen. Shouldn't be too difficult to do. Judging by your skill set, should be pretty easy. Looking good! Thanks man I'm a huge fan of your Civic. Wish I had the marbles to tear my car apart like that and build a great system. I just don't have the time or patience. I ended up scratching the other idea and starting over. The chipset ended up not sitting right and was crooked and I just couldn't find anything to hold the thing tight enough. My plan now is to take the original plastic housing of the HVAC unit and make a fiberglass mold. It will take longer but in the long run, will reduce moisture and protect the chipset. I would just mold the original housing into the Metra piece but like I said, the part alone is $125 and if I ever go to sell the car, it's just something I don't want to invest in. My whole goal is to create a unique system while keeping the ability to go back to stock. The screen actually sits out about an inch from the chipset so I'm just having trouble creating a recessed mold or bracket. I don't have any CA glue but I do have some epoxy. I really should have invested in some. You're going to have to look for it though, cause noone knows where it is and it's a big store. don't know about joanne fabrics, I know Home Depot doesn't, although i don't . maybe also check a junk yard, and see if you can get a dash mount there cheap. then you can cut it out and place it where you want, glue it in place, body fill and paint. choicewhitemeat Posted January 18, 2014 Author Report Posted January 18, 2014 Made some progress after some backtracking. The chipset just didn't fit right and I was worried about stability. Basically I took the unit apart and created a fiberglass mold of it so I didn't ruin the stock. I would love to go to a junkyard and find the parts I need but they are smarter about parts then you think around here. They will definitely check the price online before just selling it. I might call around and see. I would be pissed if I could get a good price on the information screen. Anyways here is my progress. I also took some shots to help you out Tarasco. The plexiglass is really for support while I fiberglass over it. Don't really have anything else to use. Keep it up! Clean ass car! Check mine out if you got a minute. Ok so I ended up breaking my HVAC screen somehow so I ordered another one from Ebay. Luckily, Nissan used this screen in the Murano and Pathfinder also. I search Maxima display, Murano display, and pathfinder display and found a guy selling one for $50. Jumped right on it. The brackets are different for the housing but the screens are exactly the same parts and that is the only thing I will be using. That being said, I will have a whole extra Metra kit and HVAC housing so I am going to be making a whole other one, this time using the factory HVAC unit housing. Should look a lot cleaner. I am honestly thinking about selling it to help cover some costs of the project. Anyway I made some progress. If any 09 Maxima owners are interested in a similar product (single din, HVAC screen molded underneath) please PM me. We can definitely talk a price. If anyone wants to attempt this and keep the factory HVAC part, you can find replacements on ebay from around $80-$100 for the monochrome screen unit. Just search what I suggested above. I lucked out and found a guy that didn't know the true value of the part. From the dealer it's around $250. Sits perfectly, man that was such a headache getting it lined up Testing it out. You can see where I broke the screen. Don't know how it happened but it cannot be fixed. Tried a heat gun and other tools. First round of body filler. Yes I'm using Bondo. Why? Because they don't sell Dolphin or Rage around here and I just want to get this done. In my opinion, this isn't really that bad of stuff. Leaves some small micro bubbles but everything can be taken care of with 600 grit wetsand. Got my first round of filler primer on as well. My main question for people that vinyl wrap is how blemish free does the surface have to be. Does it have to be paint worthy or can there be really small imperfections. My thought is that when it gets hot and the vinyl starts to shrink, it will pick up and blemish left on the surface. That being said, I am treating this as if I want to high gloss paint it. Lot's of high grit wet sanding. Should be receiving my vinyl in the mail today. Matte Black 3M 1080. Was thinking about plastic dipping my wheels as well but I just can't bring myself to do it because I think the flat black will look dumb with the gloss black paint. Was thinking about upgrading to 19 inch black with chrome lipped but my dad just put $1200 michelins on the car before he sold it to me. It is just such a hard piece to do because of the sharp corners. I tried heating it up and everything just wouldn't work. I've had bad experience in the past with it so I really have no idea why I ordered it. Oh well, it was only $5. I'm going to try something different and see if I can get the finish I want. If you have a CostCo membership, try that whiskey in the background. Tastes just like crown and costs $20 a handle. This is the texture I am trying to reproduce.
