How do I know if it's set up right.

I have a PlanetAudio 1500watt amp (It's all I could afford)

A 12' Pioneer Shallow 400watt RMS and 1500 Peak.

I'm running 8 gauge wire and I just don't hear the sound I thought I would, the box is in the recommended dimensions (sealed).

Yet I really don't just hear what I've heard from others with even less powerful amps and subs. So I guess what I'm asking is if the 8 gauge is affecting it?

Also how do I know how to set the gains? I've had them at the same place for a while and I don't want to blow up the sub, and how do I use a Multimeter to set the gains? I looked at the tables and whatnot but I'm just not sure how to set it properly.

-Thank you

The 8ga is affecting the amplifier but you may not notice a huge difference if you go bigger. It's hard to say exactly why it doesn't sound the way you though it would, there are too many factors without info.

Set your gains with a oscilloscope or a dd-1. That's the only method that works, multi-meter does not...

Okay, I'll probably just upgrade it to 4 when I buy the other 12". I'll look into a DD-1 though, thanks.

DD-1 is a good investment if you're serious about car audio. Or finding a friend who already has one...

i have set the gain with a voltmeter before i got my dd1. i was told to set the radio at the preferred listening volume, then hook up the volt meter to the + and - on your amp and turn up the gain until you notice the voltage start to drop.

im not sure if this is recommended or not, it was just a little trick someone at a local shop told me about and ive always done it that way. You may want to get some more info on it though if you are going to try it. My best advice would be to just invest in a DD-1.

I don't claim to know how to solve anything, I just practice the basics. There is nothing worse than wasting hours over a problem that should have taken 5 mins. Anything I post and claim to know, I know simply because of a lesson learned from a mistake on my part.

Perhaps it's because it's a sealed box?

I got a sealed box because I listen to Metal and Rock mainly, I don't want to loose the tight drum kicks.

as to this, i have an 18" in a ported box thats tuned to 32 hz and i listen to mostly metal too...it sounds great on my set up.

I second what he says. 1 12 on 1200rms tuned to 35hz and it plays metallic/Alice in chains and all that just fine

i listen to a lot of All That Remains, which is pretty bass heavy to start with. as long as your amps x-overs are set correctly, the type of music really doesnt matter too much.
