Want to build a better sub enclosure for 2x Pioneer TS-W3003D4's...

Hey all, I put a cheap system together for my sons first car but Im regretting getting a pre-fab box. I used to be pretty into car audio back in my younger days so I know the basics.

The rundown on whe we put in his 99 jeep grand cherokee:
JVC Head unit with hi volt sub pre outs (dont have the model# right now) Basically just a volume contoler and BT receiver for a nexus 7 tablet for content.
Stock mid for now

Pioneer TS-W3003D4

This Pre-fab enclosure

The subs are wired to 1ohm So each sub gets about ~600w

I need to try to build a enclosure about the same size that his lows better. I can expand on the dimensions a bit on hight and depth but only like 2in on the width.

Can some one help me out for a folded port enclosure that would be better than what i got? Thanks guys

Well, if you've been out of audio say 15 years or more, a lot of the conventional wisdom from then has been proven wrong, and most of the brands that were high end back then are now just the same Chinese trash with different logos on them.

Anyway, that body Jeep likes sub up and port to the side. If you're going to build a box, keep that in mind. There's a thing called "Hoffman's Iron Law" which states that you can have: 1. High efficiency, 2. Good low extension. 3. A small enclosure..... but only 2 of these at a time.

With that in mind, what are your goals now? What future upgrades would be on the table?

I have the exact same subwoofers and amp, looking to do my first build within the next few days checking out some box designs. Ill keep an eye on this post incase there are some good suggestions.

Might try going for 4 cubic feet net and using an 8" round port (you can cut it out of Sono Tube) or buy a pre-made flared port if you have deep pockets. 20" long 8" round port would tune you down to 36hz which IMO is pretty good for a wide range of woofers. I'd like to see you go 5 cubes or even 6 with a 10" round port, but if space is an issue that's probably out of the question for you.

With the length you have side to side in that Jeep there's no need to put any bends in your port. Porting out the side is optimum in that vehicle and a straight port is superior to folded.

4 cubes for both subs in 1 enclosure? No need for separate chambers?

I have ~just about 40" between the wheel well. 15" of height to use and up to ~20" of width. At those dimensions i get ~5.42 cubic feet net volume. Not sure if I want to go a full 20" on the width to save some space in back but if it will sound better i can use that measurement. Recommended on these subs is 1.5 cubic feet so that's quite a bit more. What size port would i want on a enclosure that size?

Im confused on 125db's post. Should I use one enclosure for both subs? I always thought separate chambers was better? I appreciate the help guys.

Ok so im playing with Torres tuning Calculator and I need clarification on what Tuning Frequency I am aiming for you said ~36Hz is good for a wide range of subs do i want to hit the number exactly?. And how does a larger Enclosure size effect the sub output? In the calculator What should i use for woofer (2x 12") and Bracing displacement? .07 on both brings it down to 4.79 Net..

Those subs should not be put in a bigger box than the max recommend size especially that you are powering with the rated power. If you use a bigger box your subs mechanical handling will reach early and you won't get max output. Most people recommend bigger boxes when under-powering.

A single chamber will sound better from my own experience especially that you using a single amp.

If each sub is 0.07 then double it to 1.4 and put it under woofer. Bracing is th displacement for the bracing used in the box.

Make sure you have port clearance of atleast the width or diameter of the port.

I'd like to use the demintions length and height I gave in my other post then I can reduce the width to ~4cu ft in a single chamber for both? No sure what over all volume I should aim for with these sub's and 1200w rms going to both them. The enclosure I have now is 1.51cu ft per sub. Its loud but I just feel its not right and I can get better sound out of them.

As for the port...I want to fire them out the side. Should I use 2, on on each side? How will a flared Port help? From the side of the box with these demention to the side of the jeep there will be about 7". Is that enough?

Tuning. He listens to rap and edm. Some rock... What should I aim for?

Bracing. What should I use to stiff in up this big opening? Doll rods?

I like this design as well.

Porting would be to the back which is not ideal for a Jeep WJ. Could the folds be turned to each side so they could come out the sides instead or would that complicate things too much? Or should i stick with a single round port?
