Jimcat Posted September 7, 2014 Report Posted September 7, 2014 ok so ive made one post on this already and am having not too much luck on my own ive been using winisd to make a box for my sub and am coming up with wayyy to much port velocity and i relize i need some help the sub requires 2 cube feet ported and i have maximum 18 by 15 by 26 just under 3 i would like to use an aeroport and tune at 34 hz i will be running on hifonics 1000.1d at 1000 rms in the trunk of a 2011 mustang with the seats folded down and sub and port firing into cabin would be great please help if u can i have been calling local shops and they dont even know what an aeroport is lol and really looking to get the box going this week side not i cant load pics any reason why i cant post off phone?
Joe X Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 You will likely have to turn the round port(s) with fittings if you want everything in the baffle otherwise fire sideways, A slot port with decent cross-sectional area will do just fine and cost $0 Generic figure with 2 bent 4" round ports, rather impractical to build.
Ritch40 Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 i am dabbling a bit with this. The way it looks right now, I dont think you have enough space to do that sub tuned to 34Hz and keep the port velocity down to a decent level. By the time i get port velocity down good the port is so large that it just kills the room you have available. For example, right now i have the port velocity down to about 53ft/sec tuned to 42Hz and the port is 13.5" by 4" opening and 35.5" long. Calculating it all out the port alone takes up 1.3cuft and that doesnt include bracing and sub displacement. That also does not factor in doing things to help the air flow better thru the port either.
Jimcat Posted September 8, 2014 Author Report Posted September 8, 2014 thanks joe and rich i think i will agree with you that i need to go slot port because the math just dosnt add up rich i came up with really similar results im going to do my best with the slot port design i read that if i tune the box lower i will need less port area is this true? and how low can i tune befor i loose alot of out put i want the box to still be musical is 30 hz too low
Joe X Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 It's true but tuning lower takes out a lot of net volume as the port will be longer. You can also fire the round ports sideways, that will work unless you are sealing off.
Jimcat Posted September 8, 2014 Author Report Posted September 8, 2014 nice sketch up by the way joe i downloaded the program but havent even played with it yet looks complicated lol since im just started to figure out winisd pro I talked to the guys at re audio today and am trying to link up with their box builder but the manager over the phone said 2.2 cubes at 34 hz is the way everyone is running it where there is a will there is a way i am bound to make this beast fit even if its the death of me Joe or Rich if either of u can come up with a slot vent encolsure that would be awesome
Jimcat Posted September 8, 2014 Author Report Posted September 8, 2014 at my shop we have a 13 gt with a 12 inch alpine type r the seats r folded up and slot port and sub firing into the trunk the false wall looked like crap my idea was to have my seats foled down port and sub firing into cabin and false wall the back of the box so i can still put things in trunk and not damage anything eventually i will delete the seats with a kit and add a hotchkis x brace and i figured it would be louder ?
Joe X Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 Given the dims you are working with, below is what can be done and it turns out to be a very simple box to build, some slight improvements could be made if you could do it a little wider and/or deeper. Power: to sub rated, amp subsonic filter to 28Hz, minimum port clearance 2 5/8", figure is just an assembly guide: NOTE: If building outside you need to build a cardboard dummy box to test fit in it's way inside.
Ritch40 Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 i am running the 15" version of the same sub. I am not at all sure why RE suggests the box volumes and ports that they do. i know every time i have modeled up one of their suggestions the port velocity gets right up there. I am currently running my 15's in a box they suggested, and i am not super thrilled with things at the moment. i will also (just to be fair to re) say that this could also be an issue with the 2 different amps ive had on them to this point as well. i do plan to switch amps and subs here soon. However, i will probably build another box and test both my current box and the new box with a much better amplifier. The biggest reason i want to change is i want to get as much American made equipment into my system as reasonably possible.
Jimcat Posted September 9, 2014 Author Report Posted September 9, 2014 joe your the man i have been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out im going to do my best to start the build tomorrow night i need to figure out posting pics from my phone i want to log my car i have kooks long tube headers and catted x pipe with flowmasters cold air intake and tune all waiting to be put in so i have a lot of work to be done and ritch nice with the 15 i bet that flexes hard your box must be huge what car u have it in? wires and amp? im planning on doing my big 3 next month when i wire my girls car and upgrade my wire
