Hopefully you're willing to pay for his subs when they overheat and burns the coil due to him not being able to smell the coils sizzling.. I think he is sending a clipped signal I agree he probably is clipping. Sending a clipped signal has nothing to do with the box style and it won't matter what box you have at that point. If he is going to rely on smell to know when to turn the volume down then invert the subs, problem solved, though that's a band-aid solution. The right thing to do would be set he gains properly!
