SMS Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 How would one figure out the wind height of a coil? Let's say the gap is 3.5" deep, former would be set at 1.75" from the bottom, is there a formula or rule of thumb of how much coil should be above the top plate? Is it really that important as long as it's not overly short? Thanks
hispls Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 Technically it's "wind width", and you'll want to consider what you're trying to do. Shorter WW will be lighter and more efficient or could even wind up being underhung (if you have a very tall gap). As you push excursion if the meat of the coil begins leaving the gap you lose linearity and motor force, and of course if it's too tall you'll start to bottom out on the backstroke. I think a better question would be "What's an acceptable wind width for whatever you you're trying to build?" Likely the manufacturer has done all the legwork testing different coils and can give you a good idea of what is optimum for any application. See you in a couple weeks on Cape Cod. No way I can make CT show from here.... that's just too much.
SMS Posted May 14, 2015 Author Report Posted May 14, 2015 Thanks Jon, maybe we could discuss it over some Brazilian buffet.
hispls Posted May 14, 2015 Report Posted May 14, 2015 That's an excellent idea. That + the fishing is about the only 2 things I miss about Cape Cod.
