germanyt Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 My buddy at work who had a sealed box for his RE SeX 12 blew a sub and decided to replace them all with SQ HDS3s and they are quite a bit louder than the REs and he's curious to see how loud he can get em. I'm gonna build him a 4th order bandpass that will fit between the wheel wells and use the existing equipment. What do you think of my plans? If you are going for numbers, that's probably to your benefit. Mostly rap music. Its not an sq setup but the subs are currently sealed and give great response across a wide frequency range. I want to keep as much musical ability as possible while blowing the doors off the sealed spl. I've done many 2/1 or 2.5/1 ratio 4th's that are within 2 db from 30Hz-60Hz You know what, I don't doubt you one bit. This is the problem with bandpass box "ratios", and why I do not like them, they tell you NOTHING. Notice that I did not say, "it's going to be peaky because it's a 2:1 ratio (roughly)" I said it's going to be peaky because the front chamber is so big. If we were to double the size of the rear chamber, that box would have a less than 1:1 ratio, but would it sound less peaky? No it would not. Conversely, if we were to cut the rear chamber in half, it would then have an almost 4:1 ratio, so would that make it have a larger peak in output? Again, not really, it would just make the low end roll off a little more steeply. "Ratios" are completely meaningless!!!! I wish I could banish them from the car audio world's collective memory. You can't take one metric about and bandpass box and expect it to tell you anything!!! Here is the simulated response of that box: The graph doesn't include any cabin gain effect, which will boost the low end output a bit. Peaky is different things to different people so its up to each person to interpret how that looks, but it looks like a pretty big damn peak to me. So I have a question for germanyt, how did you come up with the specs for your design? Did you simulate the output to get those numbers? Your peak is pretty much going to be right around your tuning frequency, so 46 Hz. Its a pretty big peak so the box may not be as musical as you would like. So this box would be loud from whatever lows the sealed will allow up to 46 hz. Not the case?
