How to tell if voice coils are blown

Recommended Posts

Ok long story short I ordered a used sub... It finally got here. Measured the coils using a dmm. First i touched both leads together to get the resistance of the leads. they registered .001 ohm. Then i put them on the voice coils. It read .001. So im led to believe the coils are blown.. Am i correct in assuming that?

You can always do the pop test too. Take a 9v battery and briefly touch the terminals to the bindings posts of each of the coils, the cone should move.

Yeah, that's not good. Try to the pop test and if the cone doesn't move for both coils they are definitely toast.

Do you have your DMM set to read ohms, not volts?

ETA: You might just want to take a picture of how you have your DMM set when you measured the coils and post it here.
