But I recently came across the DC XL 18 which needs 5.5 cu ft. of ported enclosure. I only left a certain amount of trunk space for the enclosure. If I give a tad more I would fit a box of 5.12 cubic feet. Would putting the sub in a box slightly smaller than recommended harm the sub or adversely affect sound?

What kind of car do you have? I would fire it forwards I think, away from anything else that would be in the trunk. I have tab bit over 21 inches clearance top to bottom. Car is a 2016 Impala.
