Okay, so finally, after calling around for a few hours, I found out how to get a v8 in my astro van- Legally

took a few calls to DMV, and some other places

But if I add weight (which I planned to do from the beggining- say 1000-2000lbs) I can get a v8 in my van legally...

Get weighed by Weight masters, and then off to DMV for the registration, engine does have to be newer than title on the van-and there is a extra yearly $$$ but its not awhole lot

What I have been wanting to do was line the walls with 2x4s and MDF and basically build a chamber inside the van, with a slideable /removeable box- Its dreaming big, but now that I found a 1994 TBI motor 305 $550 everything is kinda going in place.

just gonna take time

I really wanted to do carbureted with no emissions, but oh well......

anyone else know of any california laws that you can bend to squeeze a v8 in there?

I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.

4.3 isn't a 305.... a 305 is a 5.0, sorry bout emissions and all the silly laws you have out that way here we can do pretty much anything you want for your car.

If your stuck on an Astro probably not. Your gonna have to go to a referee station to make sure you have all the smog equipment for that motor. I suggest that you lose the bottom end of the 305 though and just keep the pulleys, intake and smog stuff and go get a 5.7 crate long block and bolt that in instead. They'll never know weather its a 305 or 350 under all the smog and crap.

Now if your willing to ditch the Astro, just go find any older diesel vehicle out there and convert over.

You won't see much gain from a 4.3 to a 305. Get a 350 or better. You'll want to stick to around the same year of your Astro to do it easily. Not sure what year your Astro is.

Just about all the accessories from the 4.3 will mount to the 350 without any problems. (The 4.3 is a 350 without 2 cylinders, btw).

The swap isn't hard at all to do, from what I understand. The tranny will mount right to the new engine.

Hopefully you have a earlier model Astro (1985 to 1994, I believe). The front end on them are bolted together. The newer models are welded. You'll probably drop the front anyway.

Oh well, that's my 2 cents. Easiest swap to do and will take about 1 weekend if you know what you're doing.

its just I found a 305 TBI motor for a killer price, ofcourse I would do a 350 over a 305, but the price differences(also 305 emissions are closer to that of the 4.3L-less issues)

I also did find a TPI 305 and TPI350, how cool would that be to have a vette style v8 in the astro van... lol

anyways, Iam still looking, and got pretty good info on the process

only thing wrong with the 4.3L v6 motor is a bad head gasket, but I figure might as well upgrade the whole deal.

Ive been a member on www.astrosafari.com and have read up the 4.3l to 5.7l engine swap is the easiest engine swap of all due to the fact it IS the same engine, except the 350 has 2 more cylinders... only mod is motor mounts, and short pump-water pump, and electric fan prefered

I second upgrading the whole thing. I'm thinking the same thing for my S10 when my 2.8 goes out.

Thats sounds about right. However, A small block chevy is a small block chevy. Heads and blocks for the most part are intechangeable. I've got a 283 block with 350 heads and an intake off of 327 in my impala right now. The 305 is gonna make you correct on the top end because of emissions and year but, the bottom end (block, heads and below) can be a 350. Emission wise they'll never know the difference as long as you keep all the smog stuff.
