Replaced my Kappa 1200w's with Skar SVR12's and...

I'm not really digging the sound from them. My setup is as follows

  • Pioneer 80PRS (scoped for clean output)
  • Skar RP1200.1D (scope tuned then backed down a hair for no clipping)
  • a 2x12 1.15(ish)cu. ft. per chamber...that I've had since I was 17 (I'm 36 now)

I love the sound of sealed boxes, but admittedly I haven't heard a ported box in a LONG time. I notice rolled ports, etc...so they might be better in some ways now.

The Kappas sounded great, but one unglued from the basket (I'm assuming from over excursion as they were in a bigger box), then I slinky'd the coil trying to compensate for losing the other. I bought 2 Skar SVR12d4's and for some odd reason, I just don't like the way they sound.

tl;dr: I'm thinking of going with Sundown SA12D4 V2 from the yardsale site. What are some opinions on this choice in a sealed box? Are there better options for that $170ish price point? I'm a SQ guy typically....but I kinda want to go into that 'ignit' sound...but still in a sealed box....I think. Unless there's a prefab ported box I can buy (Skar's 2.0 cu. ft.??)

With the box you currently have, and since you prefer SQ, why not go with one of the SD series sundown subs? Or the SLD... Both SD and SLD are shallow mounts and do good in sealed boxes like you already have. And your amp will match up better with these 12s than going with the SAs. The SAs will be under powered and would play better on double your current power in a larger ported box... But also would be more geared towards spl than sq.

If i was looking to match that box and amp to 2 subs in the sundown brand, and be geared towards SQ, id go with dual 4 ohm SD-4s

Singer 250amp Alt, Singer PCM bypass harness

Titan8 Lithium Underhood safe BCI PWR-S5

Big 3 W/ dual runs of power/ground. All 1/0awg OFC

SounDigital EVO 5K amp, Two 15" Fi SSD subs

Next Level Fabrication @ 7 cubes net, tuned to 32HZ

I think that's one way I'm definitely going to consider...I never even looked at any of their other offerings, so thank you for that...

When I say SQ, I'm by no means implying that I'm some audiophile or anything. I'm not committed to the idea of a sealed box...I wouldn't mind trying a ported... Though I definitely wouldn't build one. The SAs looked like a nice option for me in the event that I could ever find a HO alternator for my car... I'd be able to run more power.

For now, I might very well do the SD-4. It's intriguing. It's gotta be better than my 1200w's.

I think that the Skars don't sound good (to me) because they're in a sealed and probably want to be in a ported.

Thanks again for the reply. I appreciate it.
