gashby Posted February 11, 2021 Report Posted February 11, 2021 I have had a couple different setups kicker, pioneer, mtx, alpine, but most importantly a 10w7. It was a custom downfiring box with a jl audio 500/1 amplifier. Of everything I have ever owned, nothing hit that low or with that much power. Googling and going through forums hasn't brought me to a good conclusion. What would be a competitor to the 10w7 without breaking the bank? Why does the 10w7 cost that much. What makes it different from other subs? When I had the 10w7 previously it was in a sports car, this is going to be my daily driver. Its a 07 lexus rx400h with the mark levinson system. I just replaced the front door speakers with infinity kappa 6x9s. I was also looking into boxes, can I purchase an aero port box or do I have to make one?
Dafaseles Posted February 12, 2021 Report Posted February 12, 2021 So, as far as the w7 goes, you're paying for a lot of R&D, precision built equipment, and unfortunately, you're paying a premium to be able to say I have a JL Audio w7. Kind of like if you bought a Lamborghini, yeah, you could build something faster for half the price easy, but you pay the extra money to tell your friends I have a Lamborghini and you don't. A lot of people on car audio platforms will tell you JL is overpriced junk. It may be overpriced, but it's not junk. The w7 does exactly what it was made to do. Get decently loud while sounding great doing it. There's a lot of technology and development tricks JL used in the making of the w7 that JL actually has patents on. Their high priced amps have the same. All that cost money. Now for subs that might be comparable to the w7.... on a side note, I actually liked my w6's more than my w7.... they weren't "louder" but I thought the sound quality was better. But some other subs to check out are the Memphis VIV sub, Stereo Integrity subs, Adire subs, Image dynamics subs, FI Audio's 3.5 sub, and Hutchinson Audio subs. I'm sure some others might have some other brands to check out as well. If you're looking for good sound and "loud", a custom enclosure built specifically for the equipment you're going to use it's the only way to go. I should have worded my question better, what exactly is the tech behind the w7 that makes it different then a sub I can go buy at bestbuy? just looking at side by side pictures it looks alot larger in height then other subwoofers do.
