ptcary Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) Ok, besides all the amazing stuff I see here, the main reason I started redoing my setup in the first place was when I had a chance to listen to my buddys PT Cruiser with a 3 way component set up front with amazing midbass! So for months I have been trying to find out why my PT lacked midbass from the Hifonics components I have in the front doors. We had chalked it up to my other head unit, a Jensen touchscreen. So this past weekend I swapped it for my Alpine 9856, when I put some Selenium mids and tweets into my wall. Well guess what....when the Alpine headunit gets to 23 on the volume, it cuts midbass! 22 is fine; 23 it's gone! Anyone know a way around this? Does it have anything to do with the BBE processor or the Bass Engine? Is this only in the speaker level wires or in the RCAs too??? ISO Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I own that unit. That sounds like a funny probblem. I do run mine almost fully flat. the treble might be on 1 or 2. I don't use the BBE and the Bass Engine doesn't have anything in it that would choke out the midbass. Did you change the headunit and speakers at the same time? If you can do things one at a time it makes trouble shooting easyer. Quote Isobaric - Refers to the practice of coupling two drivers together to make them act as one. ISO Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) after rereading the issue it makes me wonder if the BBE works like a loudness button. What it might be doing is emphasizzing midbass and mid range at low volumes and as you turn it up it starts to put the EQ curve back to flat. wich makes the mid bass and mid range not as loud as they would be at lower volumes. I am hoping that it just does this on it's speaker wires, and not through the RCAs. I don't have any amps wired up in the car right now to test it, and my previous setup had no mid/highs amp, just the deck. It was not audible until I added the rear speakers and now it's subtle, but you can actually hear the difference between 22 and 23, it may be reducing bass in general, not just midbass, but it is easily heard with no subs going in the car. I run the eq flat, but the BBE on level 2 right now. And my Ipod Eq is flat. I don't think its faulty or anything, it sounds like a pre-set cutoff based upon volume, kinda like factory had units do. Sounds crazy, but I'm sure of it. Quote PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG

Yeah, probably the BBE, to hot to go out and listen to it tonight, but I'll turn off the the BBE tomorrow on my way to work and post what happens. Thanks! ISO Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I am only useing the RCA's. I am wonding if your rear speakers might beable to produce a decent amount of bass. Its possible that when youare turnning up the volume, your front speakers run out of the ability to produce low frequencies so as you turn it up the rear speakers become more overpowering and it makes it sound like no bass is comming out of the front speakers even though they might be perfectly fine. No the rear are midranges and not really producing any more midbass then the front can, but this is not a gradual shift its a definate change between 22 and 23 on the volume that is not present at any other volume level, I'm gonna hope its just in the speaker wires and not the RCAs. I only plan to run the speaker wires temporarily until I get my amplifiers wired in. **EDIT and its all the speakers that are losing the bass, not just front or rear. Its not a complete loss, but a reduction, exactly like the old loudness buttons, but more subtle. ALPINE408 Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Bbe is a fancy loud button alpine decks start to destort after vol 23 try to gain match to that vol or 22 I never use bbe that also cause some destortion Quote Have you ever had your woofers blown?

ptcary Posted June 10, 2008 Author Report Posted June 10, 2008 Thanks guys, Have had this unit for a couple of years and never knew this stuff. Always thought that BBE was pretty good for its time. Quote PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG
