okcchad Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 I'm nearly complete with a system upgrade, but so far I'm a little dissapointed in the bass. In the 90's I used to have 2x 12" Orion xbr subs (low end for Orion) powered by an Orion 275 SX series amp. All wired up that system was 2 ohm per sub, and each sub was getting around 150W RMS. On my current system I have one Dual 1 ohm 12" Fi Q wired in series to be a 2 ohm load to a HiFonics 1208D amp, which should be 900W RMS. All boxes are/were sealed. Despite the loss of surface area I really thought the huge increase in power, combined with much better/more efficient equipment, would make the new setup louder than the old setup. So far I think they are the same at best, although the SQ side of the new system is WAY better than the old system. All signs to me point toward having a crappy box. I built it myself and I'll admit it was not my best work. Does anyone have any suggestions for box design ideas? I'm considering moving to a ported box, but have no experience in that area. Some key points I'm looking for help on are: 1. How important is sub orientation? Right now I have the sub facing the cabin, but it could easily be flipped to face the trunk. 2. How important are the dimensions of the box? For instance, a 12x12x8 box has nearly the same air space as a 14x12.25x8, would you expect them to sound the same? (numbers are arbitrary). 3. Does anyone have decent plans they'd give up for a simple ported box for say... 2 cu. ft, tuned to 30 - 33 Hz? One of the dimensions cannot exceed 13.5 in due to mounting restrictions in the trunk. okcchad Posted July 10, 2008 Author Report Posted July 10, 2008 If I read that pic right it would seem your software suggests a sealed or bandpass box for this sub. I wonder if my time would be better spent going over my current box to make sure there are no air leaks. The current box has an internal airspace of about 1 cu ft (1.09 if I remember right) after I account for the sub. I know I also need to play with the phase settings on the amp too. I flipped the sub phase by 180 using my receiver and noticed a difference in how the sub sounds, and it was a touch louder. Also, the some of the numbers shown seem a bit off from what's posted on Fis website: DUAL 1 | DUAL 2 Vas: 48.3 l | 48.3 l Xmax: 27mm
Decaf Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 the ported box will be louder off less power which is an issue for you since you are already 100w short 2nd bandpass as the name refers doesnt have as wide of a range of response 3rd the q will sound fine in sealed but in my experience they shine in ported boxes whatever you end up making the ported box so long as its around 2cubes@29-33hz it will be fine and sound better than sealed imo the phase shift shouldnt sound louder... it might bring ur substage forward since it will have different timing he converted liters to cubic feet he converted mm to inches
