cnate777 Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 Hey, Ive got this dual alternator setup for my Yukon but I am now getting this crazy alternator whine. Anybody know why? I am being told that I may need to isolate the grounds from each other? I have also been told that I may have too many pieces grounded at one point. Should I ground anything to the alternator to the batteries in the back? My headunit is still being powered and grounded by the harness does that have anything to do with it? Also, I have been looking at all the pictures from the Tahoe and the Escalade and I dont see any isolators. Does anyone know how both of those trucks are wired up? I was also told not to put a jumper wire from the factory alternator harness to the other alternator to turn it on. I have it on a relay using the ignition wire from the main harness in the dash. I just need to figure out why I am getting this crazy alternator whine...it sounds like I have R2D2 coming out of my system.... Rockford Fosgate Sundown Audio DC Power Inc XS Autometer Pioneer

Try running 1/0 ground cables from both of the alternator cases directly to the negative terminal of the battery. 1-888-MECHMAN www.Mechman.com [email protected]

If you only added one new unit, check to see if it is just a noisy alternator. With the engine off, pull the plug on the new alternator, then start the truck. If the whine is gone, you know where it is coming from. This is a common problem with some (chinese) aftermarket alternators. OEM units have avalanche diodes to clamp voltage spikes. If your dual alternator bracket was painted, be sure to clean it to bare metal at all of the bolt holes & mounting points. We make modules for dual GM installs so that the computer does not have an issue with two alternators. Steve runs all 4 alternators in the Tahoe from the computer through one of our modules. MECHMAN Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 This is a common problem with some (chinese) aftermarket alternators. OEM units have avalanche diodes to clamp voltage spikes. If the unit has a bad diode in the rectifier, it will create a whining sound, you will also be down on output by 33% . Identify which alternator is making the whine, then have it tested. 1-888-MECHMAN www.Mechman.com [email protected]
cnate777 Posted September 3, 2008 Author Report Posted September 3, 2008 The alternator I bought is from DC Power Engineering. It puts out 320 amps at 1700 RMP. There is paint on the bracket so I will try that also I currently dont have any wire going from the alt. cases to the the negative side of the battery. I will try that as well. missing link- Can you explain the module you are refering too. Also, where do you get one and how much if you now? thanks for all the feedback Rockford Fosgate Sundown Audio DC Power Inc XS Autometer Pioneer

cnate777 Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Posted September 11, 2008 Ok, so I scraped the paint from the dual alternator bracket, ran 1/0 from the alternator cases to the ground and upgraded all the factory wiring to 1/0 and I still have a LOT of noise. I also ran 2 runs of 1/0 from the back group of batteries to where I have the battery grounded up front. So i tried hooking everything back up to the OE alternator and the noise went away considerably but it is still there and it is still loud for a ground loop. I am still using the factory harness for my ground to the headunit should I be grounding it seperatly? Anyone have any other ideas? I need some help...BAD Rockford Fosgate Sundown Audio DC Power Inc XS Autometer Pioneer

cnate777 Posted September 15, 2008 Author Report Posted September 15, 2008 Ok, so it turns out that I am getting a little noise through my alt but I also used the thread that refers to the Pioneer headunits and grounding the RCA's to the HU. So I am going to send the alt back and hopefully they can fix it . Thanks for all the input everyone it helped. Rockford Fosgate Sundown Audio DC Power Inc XS Autometer Pioneer
