My 2000 sunfire's makes a grind sound that sounds as if its comming from the compressor, but it only does it when its off  everyone else who has the same grind as me only does it when its on. Is it the compressor going bad? To me it sounds like the clutch mechanism, can I just replace that? I need to do it asap since winter is comming and I don't wanna run my ac just so I don't have the grind noise.

The idler bearing inside the A/C compressor clutch pulley is probably toast. When you engage the clutch, some of the side load is carried by the compressor shaft so it quiets down. This added side load is not good for the compressor, and you should fix this ASAP. Pull the belt off, and spin the compressor pulley by hand. If it rumbles, grinds or feels rough, the bearing is gone.

If you keep running it, the bearing may lock up & spin on the aluminum compressor snout. Your Sunfire runs a V5 compressor, and if you spin that bearing a new compressor is 350 bucks.

The clutch can be replaced, and on some cars it can be done without opening the system.

Some of those are easier to deal with from below the vehicle... FWD is a PITA.

For parts I always deal with AMA in Phoenix. They have a website - http://www.ackits.com/ but in this case you should just call them. They stock clutch assemblies, but the website does not list all of the inventory. 1-602-233-0090 Jack or Tim will be glad to help you out.

Top quality parts, at a fair price. They may be able to tell you a lot about the install as well.

Subs are like titties, They need to come in pairs because ones and threes are just wrong, and larger amounts will always draw a crowd, we all have our favorite sizes, but the bigger ones are more fun to watch move. :D
