Battery Isolators= Bad?

Recommended Posts

ive been doing some reading on here about battery isolators.. and apparently they are bad. they make the system more complicated, take away from voltage, and kill your alternator! so its just a piece of extra equipment that isnt needed right?

HOWEVER.

i was told that i NEED one because my starter battery is in the trunk (2005 Saturn Ion 4dr). the guy at autozone (id say he knew what he was talking about, def more credible than bb and cc mofos) said that the isolator was needed otherwise my (stock) alternator would struggle to keep both batteries charged this way (with the isolator) i would only charge one battery at a time.

:help: IF YOU DONT LIKE READING SKIP TO HERE FOR THE QUESTION :help:

What do i need to do guys? i have a kinetik hc600 and i wanna run it parallel to my stock starter battery (that is in the trunk) that is carrying (1) audiopip 1500.1d amp for subs and (1) audiopipe 1504 for mids and highs... how do i do the whole battery thing.

you ain't been bizzy til you've been wit jizzy.

Battery Iso do make it more complicated and take away a little voltage but doesn't kill your alt... Battery Iso just seperates your batterys so you can run your system off one battery wihout pulling from your starting battery with car off. So your car will start and when you start it doesn't strain you alt trying to charge low bats...

Simple though.. Run your system with car off = Need Bat Iso

Don't run system with car off = No need

OK to be totally honest....that guy at Autozone had it a little backwards. Even with the isolator you will charge both batteries at the same time. What the isolator does is separate the batts when the vehicle is OFF so once the vehicle is started both batteries will be connected hence the alt will charge BOTH batteries not just one. Also isolators tend to get dirty and over time will have major voltage drops. You don't need an isolator.
