You are right about the cutting of signal, but it still over powers it.

clipping doesnt overpower a speaker. the amp tries to overpower itself. a clipping 500 watt amp on a 2000 watt sub wont overpower the sub. the amp itself is straining trying to put out more power than it can. clipping doesnt blow the speakers either. the added heat is what blows them

This is true - if you ran a square wave with energy of 500w into a RE MT for more than a few minutes you would get some very smoky coils and you sure weren't 'overpowering' it.
