Finally ready for DVD...I think.

Recommended Posts

Thinkin bout upgrading my Alpine deck to a Kenwood KVT-717DVD.

Anybody got any experience good/bad w/ em or have any helpfull input before I order me up one.

I have not had a need/desire for a dvd player up to this point, so I just started looking at them/shoppin around. Technically I still don't really NEED one now, however I am starting the plans for my "bigger and badder upgrade" and among things that need to be pimped out is my source unit.

Any comments good/bad/ likes dislikes?

I have the KVT 617 installed in my car, and my friend has a 717...i don't think there's a world of a difference between the two..I like almost everything about the unit, once u attach the Navigation Unit to it as well, works awesome. One downside to it could be the GUI, it's not noob friendly at all. A lot people returned the 617/717 because it was too complicated and wasn't flashy...But I love it, sure it's not flashy, and you're no where close to a noob, you'll master the unit easily... they both have the DUAL zone function, it allows u to play something (dvds etc) front stage, while another source (radio) can be playin in the back speakers, for the rear passengers..(i've never used it..people who sit in my car either listen to one thing or gtfo :) ) in terms of all the EQ controls and everything, it lacks a little bit (No TA etc), but nothing too drastic..One little problem I have with my unit is that it sometimes won't read burnt dvds if they're cold as hell(cold in kanada eh) but once they get a little warm it plays em no problems at all, but it'll read originals right away.. all in all 617/717 are both good units, and again the only complaints that i've heard from people gui looks ugly, and..it's complicated to use.. not really sure what more to tell you, ask away and ill tell you..

YEA, thnx, that's pretty much was I was lookin for, just like testimonials as to good/bad/reviews. The stuff they aint gonna tell you and you find out once you try F'n w/ it in traffic.

I've read reviews on it and it's pretty much all the same as you said. They say It's difficult to "master" but you're right, I've been doin this a while and I put a N1, D1, Z1, and few other (Clarion/Alpine) dvd players in buddies rides and "mastered em" w/out needing the manual. But like I said never been a dvd guy, so just startin to consider a new unit. The other complaint is the reverse opening. I see no difference 1 way or the other and kinda prefer the oddball/non standard setup.

The main diff I saw between the 617 and 717 was preamp voltage...& I gottsta have my voltage.

what's the pre amp voltage on the 717?  cause 617 is 5volts....good thing about these units, the wires are so damn long, the brain mounted in the corner of my trunk..made it easy as hell for wiring up the 4 channel :)...

Hmmmm wierd.

1st time i was lookin around I swear like 3 diff sites said the 717 was 5v and the 617 was 2v.

I just dub checked crutchfield and it says their both 5v.

My bad, I guess either would work then.

Nice catch.
