milesmiles Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I have my 240 watt amp (on a 150 watt sub) hooked up to my laptop, and I have to turn the volume on the laptop fairly high to get the sub moving. At like 3/4 gain, 3/4 volume on the laptop it moves nicely; anything below that it moves decently, but nothing too great. When I was stripping the output wire on the amp a few wires came out; could that be causing the problem? Or is this normal? Thanks for any insight.
badcayne Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 more than likely you laptop doesnt put out enough volts on the audio output(im assuming the headphone jack)to get that amp working properly.
milesmiles Posted April 16, 2009 Author Report Posted April 16, 2009 That's possible. I'm guessing setups with the bigger stereo plugs would do better?
Boon Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Uh, it sounds like it's behaving exactly like it should... 10.x volts fo' life!

Yep. The preamp output from a head unit is 2 volts peak-to-peak. When driving a ~2000ohm load like the amplifier, the headphone output of your PC will only be able to manage about 1 volt peak to peak.
