Do ALOT of reading on how exactly your gains work, and once you understand it you can do it just fine by ear. If you're really concerned about it, you can get a oscilloscope which will be the most accurate way to set your gains, but are somewhat costly. And if you really need a DMM and you will be using it ALOT, I suggest just breaking down and buying a fluke. CERTIFIED BITCHES!!! Not being new at something doesn't mean anything.
