Hooking up an external sub to my system

So I'm in college. I have my 500 watt stereo rocking in my tiny-ass quad. I've decided I want more bass. I found a cheap standalone home theater sub that I'd love to be able to add onto my system. However, my stereo does not have an output for a subwoofer. The sub is externally powered (built in 400-watt amp), so power really isn't an issue. I'm wondering if there is a way I can wire the sub into my system. I only have 2 outputs on the stereo unit (left and right speakers connected with spring terminals). I know this seems like a really odd and/or simple question, but it's worth a shot to ask. My knowledge of audio equipment is telling me that wiring the sub and speakers in series will do the trick. I know wiring them in parallel would increase resistance and put the stereo into protect, so I want to avoid that obviously. If anybody's got any thoughts or helpful ideas, feel free to throw them up here. Thanks guys!

Nobody? I'm real close to buying this thing, but I don't want to do it and later find out it doesn't work. If anyone knows if this will work and/or how I could make it work, please let me know.

This is kind of out there but I like shit like that...I would take a LOC ie high to low converter and wire it in line with your speakers and take the rca output from that to the home sub you might need a y adaptor to take the 2 rca's to one on the back of the sub but that should work. :hairtrick:

I have a self powered sub and it has it's own convertor in it. look on the back of the sub you're looking to get to see if it has such a thing. then all you have to do is run your full range full power speaker wires through it on their way to the speakers.

most plate amps would have 4 binding posts on it, you'd basically run high level to those for signal.

post up a link to the sub you're thinking of buying and let us see if it does it

this is what my amp looks like on my sub

if urs has that u can run wires from recever to the top line of spring clips, then wire ur speakers to the bottom line of spring clips, it wont mess with independence load on recever, its just a line level input, and u can set it to auto n when ever the radio turns on n it sences a signal it will turn the sub on

or if it dont have that get u a line level box like u would use ina car audio setup to add a sub amp to a factory stereo like this thing

but ya its cool to have home subs that have a standalone 110v plate amp, i took my sub out, ran wires threw the port n hooked to it n ran my car subs off it, but i wouldn't go below 2ohm with it tho, mine didn't like it, but didn't mind it either tho

Off topic but seriously, does it take that much out of your day to put an a and a d on either side of n when you want to say and? If it's that hard to do 3 characters at least use an ampersand and not have your posts look like a txt message from a 7 year old.
